Norway to increase development assistance

03/12/2007 // The Norwegian government intends to increase development assistance by NOK 2.2 billion in 2007.  Overall, the development assistance budget for the year amounts to NOK 20.75 billion:  the highest level ever, corresponding to 0.97 per cent of Norway’s gross national income (GNI).    

The Norwegian government’s political profile is reflected in five areas in the development assistance budget;

• Peace-building, human rights and humanitarian assistance

• Women and gender equality

• Environment and sustainable development

• Better governance and the fight against corruption

• Assistance in the field of oil and energy
 
The Government has also taken on particular responsibility for following up on Millennium Development Goal 4 on reducing child mortality. The Government will also follow up on the international target of doubling assistance to Africa between 2005 and 2010.
